Werewolf special roles: distinguish Seer, Witch and Hunter

Special roles change information and the consequences of a night. Read actual tasks before bringing memories from a different Werewolf version into this round.

Werewolf game card from Splash It

The Seer checks a person, the Witch has one healing and one poison potion, and the Hunter acts on death. Roles present depend on the actual arrangement.

Use the current arrangement as the reference

Werewolf supports seven to twenty active players. Role distribution depends on the group; not every special role appears every time. Read privately assigned tasks and the current sequence. This page does not add roles or promise freely configurable wish lists. If someone knows another variant, clarify differences before starting. A familiar name can still have different details from the card set that person last played, so familiarity alone should not determine the rules for everyone.

Separate Seer knowledge from public certainty

The Seer can inspect a person’s card at night and receives private information. How and when to use it in daytime discussion is part of that role. A loud public role claim is not automatically true. The group considers it with other statements. Avoid demanding a private phone view as proof when the sequence keeps it secret. That would change the information structure rather than simply making discussion more persuasive or encouraging a clearer explanation from someone.

Understand limited Witch potions

The checked Witch rule specifies one healing and one deadly potion, each usable once. A used potion does not automatically return every night. Read the actual action and record use according to the current sequence. This guide does not claim unlimited healing. A group that grants both potions again each night out of habit follows a different rule from the described role. Clarify such differences before the next round instead of discovering them only after a result changes.

Tie the Hunter action to its moment

The Hunter can take another person with them at the moment of death. This is not an unrestricted repeated daytime attack. Whether a Hunter appears in your particular round follows the assigned arrangement. Moderation needs to recognise that moment and apply the actual guidance. Other players should not invent an extra Hunter action because they remember another version. A missed or unclear step needs open clarification rather than a silent replacement with rules known only to one participant.

Avoid assuming further special roles

Additional roles or lovers may matter depending on the arrangement. Read their own tasks and victory conditions. A general village-against-wolves explanation does not cover every special situation completely. That is why current cards matter. A guide can explain familiar differences without promising one complete fixed list for every player count. If an assigned role remains unclear, clarify the term before the first night call without publicly exposing who holds it or changing another person’s secret knowledge.

Compare private information and bluff by day

Active players discuss the known sequence and select a person. Distinguish observed outcomes, claimed knowledge and personal guesses. The Seer can hold information; someone else can bluff the same claim. The group investigates statements rather than nervousness or accent. One editorial agreement is to hear each voice briefly first. That supports clarity but is not an automatic speaking-time feature. Eliminated participants should not reveal private roles outside the intended resolution and alter the current players’ information.

Check victory against the game actually started

The village wins when all wolves are eliminated; wolves win at numerical parity. Special roles can have additional conditions. Follow the actual arrangement rather than announcing an outcome from a broad memory. Afterwards, discuss accidental leaks or unclear calls and prepare a better next start. Changing a rule for the next round needs a shared decision and should not retrospectively reinterpret a completed sequence. The current result and a future agreement are separate decisions for the group.

Common questions about this topic

Does the Witch receive two new potions each night?

No. The checked role describes one healing and one deadly potion, each usable once.

Is a Hunter present in every round?

The actual distribution decides. Do not assume a role has been assigned merely because this guide explains it.
