Explain Taboo better: forbidden words and three possible skips

Useful explanations find another route to the target. The displayed forbidden words and limited skips determine which approaches remain available in this round.

Taboo game card from Splash It

Describe the target without using or implying forbidden terms. Up to three skips are possible per round; the actual timer and team display remain the reference.

Read target and forbidden terms first

Look at the target and the complete forbidden list before speaking. Avoid beginning blindly with your first association when it appears there. Current app rules also prohibit implying a forbidden term. The task is an allowed description rather than a technical trick to bypass the list. The opposing checker needs the same information; the guessing team should not see the secret target. Agree on these positions before beginning the timed sequence.

Choose another description level

If the immediate definition is blocked, consider use, everyday situation, material or contrast. An original example is an object used to open a locked door. Whether that description is permitted depends on the actual list; this is not a claimed app card. Give understandable complete clues and notice whether your team finds a direction. Repeating an implied forbidden association increasingly quickly does not create a new permitted approach or make the original clue more useful.

Use team guesses as information

Listen to suggestions rather than only repeating your planned sentence. If the team heads towards the wrong area, change the reference from place to function or appearance to use. Do not confirm an answer with a forbidden term yourself. One suitable correction can help more than many additional details. The team also needs chances to answer. Someone who explains without pause may notice too late that listeners interpreted a key clue quite differently from what was intended.

Use up to three skips deliberately

The current Taboo rule allows up to three skipped words per round. Check the display and remaining sequence. A skip may help when the target is unfamiliar or no allowed route comes to mind. Avoid spending one simply through nerves at the first difficult word. Equally, you need not spend all remaining time stuck on one target. This is tactical choice within the rules; the guide does not add extra skips to the app.

Agree how checking works beforehand

Under the current rule, a target does not count if a forbidden word is said or implied. Clarify how the checker will signal a violation understandably. Apply the same standard to both teams and do not change it after a close result. An argument about an edge case should not retrospectively rewrite a completed turn. Read the displayed rule first and settle open language cases before the next round rather than during a later dispute about points.

Rotate explainers and organise teams

Taboo supports four to twenty active players. Spread language and knowledge strengths where possible and follow the app’s team arrangement. Let different people explain. A familiar teammate may interpret a short association differently from a new acquaintance; this does not create a general entitlement to easier words. Seating and rotation are practical group agreements rather than promised extra settings. The shared sequence should distribute opportunities to participate instead of leaving one person to explain every time.

Review specific choices afterwards

Discuss one completed target: which permitted description helped, where an assumption sent guesses elsewhere and whether skipping made sense. Have this conversation after the turn without revealing other secret targets. Assess the decision using information available then rather than only the final score. An unsuccessful explanation can still contain a useful approach. A concrete comparison teaches more than a general judgement that one teammate simply cannot explain well or should always leave that role to someone else.

Your quick check

  • Read the target and complete forbidden list.
  • Find another description level instead of an implication.
  • Listen to guesses and adapt permitted clues.
  • Use up to three skips according to the display.
  • Apply checking and rotation fairly to both teams.
